ADDRESSING MISINFORMATION

Many believe that the rise of antisemitism is a newer problem because of the mass media coverage and access to technology that allows one to hear about news instantaneously. The Rise of AntiSemitism has been a recurring issue, especially within the Black community because of the ability of Jewish people being able to pass as white, views of Black people being the true Jews, having too much power in media, financial careers, and more. However, Black and Jewish solidarity is often forgotten and neglected. Our shared history of pain must continue to be acknowledged and shared to connect and strengthen the bond between the Black community and the Jewish community.

THE RISE OF ANTISEMITISM

THE FACTS.
  • According to the Anti-Defamation League, 2021 was the highest year on record for documented reports of harassment, vandalism and violence directed against Jews.

  • Additionally, ADL also reported there has been a consistent five-year upswing in the number of antisemitic incidents which is unprecedented in ADL’s three-plus decades of data collection.

  • The current streak includes the 2018 attack on the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue - where a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshippers

  • Another report, “The Anti-Semitism Worldwide Report 2021” found in the year 2021 the number of anti-Jewish hate crimes recorded in cities like New York and Los Angeles was almost twice that of the previous year.

  • These acts were decreasing for over a decade but in 2016 they started to increase, likely due to a variety of factors. Moreover, within the Black community, there is a history of anti-Semitic sentiments from Black leaders and public figures that have left an unaddressed inter-racial dynamic despite a strong history of positive Black and Jewish relations.

  •  For example, prominent leaders like Malcolm X openly expressed anti-Semitic sentiments which continue to loom over our community today.

  • A 2020 report found that 42% of Black liberals compared to 15% of white liberals endorsed anti-Semitic stereotypes.

  • With Kanye West’s open and well-publicized anti-Semitic statements in 2022, the impact and potential damage for this generation is clear.

  • Young Generation Z Kanye fans took to social media in support of his beliefs. It is our responsibility as young African Americans to do our part to educate our peers and to actively stand against Anti-Semitism.

  • A study has found that Gen Z is the generation with the least amount of knowledge about the Holocaust

  • 63% of respondents did not know 6 million Jews were annihilated in the Holocaust

  • Over half of the same respondents believed that the total deaths were under 2 million
